Report from the West

This weekend a group of Bobcats convened on the west coast for a weekend of JNQs in Truckee. Racers from the Truckee/Tahoe area and Mammoth competed and several teams from Oregon came down as well for the races. Bria, Max, and Laurel competed and were lucky to have Filly, who is home for Christmas, come up to cheer. Everyone was also graced with the presence of Jordan Buetow, now better known as "Coach Jordan". It was a happy reunion for the western Bobcats!

Saturday was a skate sprint and Laurel and Max managed to snag second places in their B finals. Sunday was a classic 5k for the ladies and a 10k for the boys. Laurel placed fourth, Bria 9th, and Max 6th in their respective races. Despite wet and rainy conditions, not to mention the high altitude, everyone finished the weekend in good spirits!

Eastern Cup Openers

The East coast crew (Condor, Nick, Dylan, Chris, NateDog, Hallie, Halie, Tara, Britta) headed over to Riker (Midd) this weekend for the first race weekend of the season- the JOQ/E Cup. There was a fantastic turnout and competitive fields, with about 180 starters per gender... pretty awesome to see that many young people out ski racing!

Saturday was beautiful and sunny and we raced individual start classic distance, 5k/10k. Sunday was dusting snow and about the same cool temp and we raced mass start skate distance, 10k/15k. Coaches provided great skis, were able to get out there and cheer, parents provided the laughs and Bobcats skied smooth and brought in solid results for this early in the season. Very productive weekend! It was our first race back with Britta and Gracie (who was cheering since she'd not yet been on snow), who have recently arrived back from semesters abroad. We also saw alum ('14) Gabby who is coaching for MWSC, and many other friends of Bates Nordic!

Also racing this weekend we had Wade and Parker in the Rocky Mountain JOQ's, and Laurel, Max, and Bria in Truckee at the Far West JOQ's... skate sprint and classic distance for them. So we are all logging in the intensity, putting the bib on, and having a blast.

Winter Break in VT

It's been a lovely last week here in northern Vermont. I've had the opportunity to ski with a number of fine friends and family members in a beautifully wintery wonderland.
I skied with Heather at Rikert last weekend. Perhaps the highlight of our day was this beautiful cup of coffee...Or the midwinter conditions!

I was greeted by this cute smiling face when I returned home. Meet Frankie! (She's a girl)
Skiing with Mom.

New home?

Phoebe visited and we went on a "sunrise"hike. Except the sun had already risen and it was a little cloudy- but still fun!

Happy Winter!!

Sugarloaf shreddin'

East coast'ers and a few extra spent the first weekend of break skiing at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center. I'm not sure what was making us so giddy... the fresh, sparkling corduroy, the fact that we were done with exams and on break, or the sunshine. Regardless, we had an absolute blast. Happy break to all!! --Tara, Amy, and Sadie.

Got to ski with alum (2014) Caroline Daniels and friend of bates nordic- PC!

Girl Trail on interval day

OMG look perfect corduroy!

Breaking track and enjoying the woods

Can't beat that!

Snack central seems to follow us wherever we go...
and Island Farm carrots (thanks Ellen!! our team carrot sponsor)

Followed trails to the bottom of Snubber and took a rest

Just beautiful.

In addition, we ran into slippery Nate and family (congrats Hadley for getting into Bates ED!) and the Fullers. Bobcats everywhere. Happy holidays!

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

It’s officially time for the Bobcats to go home for Christmas break. At 5:30 this morning a small gathering ensued at the Portland airport as Maddy and I were dropped off by Tara in her PJs. Condor of course arrived at the same time as we did, sporting a massive fur hat, to drop off Connor Gray. After a breakfast date at the bagel shop (the only place to eat in the Portland airport) we all went our separate ways, Connor on his way to Altanta (LOL).

This is the first time in a while that the team has split for this long. Although many of us have mixed feelings about going home, because let’s face it Bates really does feel like home, a break is going to be good for us. I always say that in college you sometimes get stuck in a bubble. I tend to learn about current news one or two weeks late and sometimes forget that we are in a holiday season. This break represents a time to spend time with family, enjoy the holidays, and to reflect on the past semester.

As a team we’ve had an awesome first semester. There has been a lot of learning, both in the classroom, and in our daily practices. We’ve adopted an amazing group of first years who feel like they’ve always been here. We’ve also adopted a new assistant coach, who I’m pretty sure has had an impact on everyone’s technique and attitude. Almost every week we have gotten to experience Becky’s cheering during Lost Valley intervals. We went to Rangeley and my team did not win the apple pie baking competition; our pie was more commonly known as “the undercooked mole hill”. We took a beautiful ferry ride to North Haven Island to do the Lobster Roll rollerski race. Then, it was suddenly Thanksgiving camp. The boys grew their mustaches out, and the girls tried their best to do the same. We skied every day amongst other eastern teams and remembered how thankful we are to be able to call this team our family. The grand finale came with finals week. There was a screaming baby on my plane ride this morning and I thought, “Oh, girlfriend, I feel your pain.” Enough said.

After going to a fun race at Colby last weekend, it became apparent to me that ski season is just around the corner. Many of us have qualifiers that we are going home to. During the last week of break, a group is heading to the UP to Houghton for Senior Nationals while the rest of the crew will be at Sugarloaf for a camp. The following week we will return to school and BOOM, there’s the Bates Carnival. It’s been another whirlwind of a semester and sometimes it doesn’t feel like we’ve had enough time. The reality is, we’ve accomplished so much in the past few months and soon we will be able to put together all of the hard work into something great.

I am going to miss the team a lot this Christmas break, but am so excited to be going home to my family for the holidays. All of the Bobcats deserve a break to revive themselves before the craziest and most fun six weeks of the year. In the meantime, I encourage everyone to play in the snow, hug your dog (or cat), eat lots of Christmas cookies (maybe gain a few, it’ll help on the downhills), and drink plenty of eggnog.

Happy Holidays!

...and this year we remembered to make stuffing.

Over Thanksgiving break, Bates Nordic took a trip up North to finally trade out our wheels on black pavement for pieces of wood and plastic on white snow.

Among all the awesome things we did in Quebec, we most importantly crushed turkey day with our flawless cooking (minus burnt chocolate and popcorn...) and an absurd amount of velour.

P$ and Max cooked squash and repeatedly said "I'm in the kitchen, yams errywhere"

Maddy's cranberry sauce was a hit...for the four seconds before it was all gone.

PBP made his mom's Pecan Pie

Hallie embraced her Jewish roots by making Sweet Potato Latkas

Boyz

Velour.

We did also do some skiing occasionally, and thanks to Maddy we were able to capture a few of the elusive bobcats:

we are mostly thankful we only have two weeks left until Christmas break, where we will all go our separate ways and spend the holidays eating way too much sugar and training way too hard. xoxoxox, the Bates family wolfpack.

SNOW!

This morning, we went for a lovely almost-winter snowy adventure at Bradbury State Park.
It was awesome and made us all remember that winter is close.
The boys and the rollerski crew were too speedy for the camera!

Girls!

Looks like winter to me!

Girl train!

You know you've been out a while when you start taking selfies!

Happy late fall!

I'm 3,437 miles away and skiing is still pretty cool.

HEJ team/world/mom/dad/extendedfamily/dedicated#batesskiingfans,

I am writing to you from the bustling metropolis of Torsby, Sweden, a town of 4050 people, or, based on my estimations, 4000 past or present nordic skiers, 49 coaches and one guy that runs the grocery store and is probably delighted that his store outperforms all of Sweden in sales of bananas, powerbars and peanut butter. Torsby is the site of the aptly named Torsby Ski Tunnel, where I am training for the week with the British ski team. Thanks dad for the dual citizenship! It has been a wonderful camp so far! Today I not only skied behind but PASSED Hanna Falk, who can be seen here  almost beating our girl Kikkan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1krQWVH77Sg. Admittedly she was skiing L1 with no poles behind her coach and I was doing L3 intervals and was still occasionally getting passed by 6 year old norwegian boys, but an exciting moment nonetheless. Here are some more photos/musings from my adventure thus far!

Hopefully this video works...just me skiing along to a lil John Legend. The music they play in the tunnel is pretty fantastic. Nothing like doing intervals to Dido's "White Flag" or "Wagon Wheel."

It is a constant -3 degrees celsius in the tunnel which is perfect training "weather." Fashion is clearly a pretty big deal here..it is definitely not that bright but everyone wears their sunglasses anyway.
I am pretty sure this is an outdoor gym but also a playground for the nearby school... If you look in the background you can see the hill where people bound. Last night walking home in the dark from skiing, I was really excited to see a herd of deer running around on the hill. Except not actually it was like 50 (I'm not kidding) little kids doing bounding intervals. Nordic skiing is cool.
 Here is a sign
 Here is a selfie.
Here I am tryin to look cool, casual n candid in the tunnel. Is it working?

I will try to send along another update at the end of the week! I hope everyone in Maine and beyond is having a wonderful fall! Mucho love!! Time for a nap!
XOXOXOX
Britta
